Photos For Us

The following was written in 2014

One of my mother’s most prized possessions are her film photos. Nestled in white envelopes that snuggle into sandy colored boxes, they sleep for years until a pair of curious fingers picks them up. For me, looking through my mom’s photos always meant an afternoon of grins, memory-jogging, and laughing at bad haircuts or halloween costumes you know someone was proud of. There’s something magical about taking pictures you can’t immediately scrutinize, or quickly edit for an up-to-date profile picture-- printed photos that take the gentleness of two hands to hold and flip through, to be reminisced when the memory is no longer crisp and the moment seems so long ago you’ve already started to miss it.

My actual film rolls are tucked safely in a Muji portfolio at home. But to accommodate with the digital age, I made this to showcase my own “boxes” of film photos to be scrolled through as one pleases. If you’re in the mood to look back at times you honestly don’t remember posing for, or are curious to see the moments I’ve attempted to preserve through film, free to scroll, print, keep, use.

These are photos for us.
